What is blood plasma?

Blood consists of RBC, WBC, platelets and plasma. Plasma is the often forgotten part of blood. Apart from other parts of blood plasma too plays important role.
Blood plasma is a yellowish liquid that holds blood cells and proteins in suspension and carry them throughout the body.


Plasma is the largest part of blood. It makes up more than half(about 55%) of its overall content. Plasma carries water, salts and enzymes.

Plasma is a critical part of the treatment for many serious health problems. This is the reason, donation of blood is highly appreciated. Apart from water, salt and enzymes, plasma contains antibodies, clotting factors and proteins albumin and fibrinogen. When you donate blood, healthcare providers separates these vital parts from plasma. These products can be used in treatments that can help save the lives of people suffering from burns, shocks and other medical emergencies.


What is plasma bank?

A plasma bank functions like a blood bank, key foreign countries has many plasma banks but India recently got its first plasma bank on 2nd July 2020 at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences(ILBS).


Why was it set up?


It is setup to ease the access to plasma that is being used as a trial to COVID19 patients. The bank will coordinate with patients who recovered from COVID19, and are eligible to donate plasma. It will be given to those who are suffering from COVID19, and have been advised the plasma therapy by doctors.
Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences has been setup nodal centre for collection of plasma. It is setup by seeing the rising demand among patients and patient's attendants, they runs haphazardly to find plasma from a recovered patient.


Who can donate plasma?


Those who had disease, but have recovered at least 14 days before donation can be considered - although doctors prefers a time of three weeks between recovery and donation. People should age between 18 and 60, and should not weigh less than 50kg. Some essential tests are conducted for safe transfusion.

How donor can reach the plasma bank?


Eligible and willing donor can call 1031 or WhatsApp details at 8800007722. A team of professionals will then get in touch. A vehicle will be sent to donor's home, all expenses will be bear by government.
